Naomi told the crowd of well-heeled celebrities and fashion insiders,

‘I learned today that I’m the first woman of color to receive this award.’ That leaves me to say who I consider my style icons: Grace Jones, Josephine Baker, Eartha Kitt, Donyale Luna, Bethann Hardison, Naomi Sims, Dorothy Dandridge, Diana Ross, Diahann Carroll, Janet Jackson, and Tina Turner.’

‘I could go on and on, but I want to thank you for paving the way for me and inspiring a generation.’

So dope that she paid tribute to those who paved the way. We also love that she counted Janet Jackson as one of her icons WITH JANET in the room.

Janet posted from both the Fashion Awards as well as an afterparty on her IG stories and included a couple pictures on her main feed.

Still Got It: Tracee Ellis-Ross Reminded Us That The Women From ‘Girlfriends’ Are All Still Fine As Hell

The Cast Of Girlfriends Now

Tracee Ellis Ross blew up the internet when she posted a video of a reunited cast of Girlfriends. In case you don’t remember, the show is one of the iconic, memorable black shows of all time. It revolutionized the way black women were portrayed on TV. Also, it showed four fine a$$ black women living their lives.

Obviously, since the show ended, Tracee Ellis Ross has gone on to be a huge superstar and star of Black-ish. The other three women, Jill Marie Jones, Persia White and Golden Brooks are still acting and also living their best lives. Now, it looks like we’ll see them all together again on Black-ish. This has, of course, shattered Twitter.

However, the above clip is also a reminder that these women are still fine as all hell in 2019. Want to get put on? Hit the flip and see for yourselves…

Tracee Ellis Ross Announces “Girlfriends” Reunion

Tracee Ellis Ross made a huge announcement that’s got fans of her 2000s feel-good black girl sitcom in a tizzy. The actress announced that ALL the ladies of “Girlfriends” will appear alongside her on an episode of “Black-ish.”

The ladies; Golden Brooks, Jill Marie Jones, and Persia White also starred with Tracee in the announcement video looking EXACTLY THE SAME.

“So we have an extra special episode of ‘Black-ish,’ and it’s a feminist episode, and I brought in some backup from some of my girlfriends,” said Tracee in the video.

Entertainment Weekly got the exclusive on the episode titled “Feminisn’t” that airs October 8. The premise is as follows;

“When Bow [Ross] learns that Diane [Marsai Martin] and Ruby [Jenifer Lewis] don’t believe in feminism, she brings Diane to meet the women in her feminist group. Bow’s friend Abby [guest stare Nadia Quinn] thinks the group needs to be more inclusive, so Bow invites three of her girlfriends to join. Meanwhile, Junior [Marcus Scribner] and Jack [Miles Brown] help Dre [Anthony Anderson] after he realizes he is out of touch with modern day feminism.”

“Girlfriends” aired from 2000 to 2008.

Tracee Ellis Ross Covers Essence Magazine Hair Issue

Seriously though. Is there anything that Tracee Ellis Ross can’t do? The actress and CEO of Pattern Beauty graced the cover of Essence Magazine’s October Hair Issue and literally stopped the Internet with flawless flicks from the spread.

In the mag, Miss Ross: The Beauty Boss gushed about the new chapter in her life as the creator and founder of her very own Hair Care Company which celebrates the different curl patterns of naturalistas all over the globe.

“It’s called Pattern because it is about the magical patterns of our hair. I am launching a haircare line for curly, coily and tight, textured hair to empower people and meet the unmet needs of our community at a price point we can afford, because we know that we need a lot of product in all this hair.”

But just as the case is for most women of color, it was a long, hard journey for Tracee to embrace the beauty in her Blackness.

“It took me way longer than I wish it had. I’d catch glimpses of people who saw beauty in ways I had missed because of the blinders society gave me. Then one day I was watching a Nina Simone documentary and I thought: Wait. It should be her name next to the word “beauty.” Why was I sold the wrong vision? My heart knows that’s beauty.”

However, despite how long the journey to pride took, the Black-ish star has always been relatable and woke.

“A lot of people are awake right now, and thank God. I think I’m learning. I think I’m growing. There is a war that is happening, a fight for control over women’s bodies. Children in cages. Concentration camps in our country, right now. It keeps me up at night.”

We love of woke, inspiring CEO! Pattern Beauty Products are officially available for purchase at patternbeauty.com. Hit the flip for more Tracee Ellis Ross in Essence Magazine’s October Hair Issue.

Tracee Ellis Ross Will Star In & Executive Produce ‘Daria’ Spinoff ‘Jodie’

Tracee Ellis Ross is taking the lead on a new series stemming from a celebrated MTV show.

According to Deadline, the Black-ish star will executive produce and star in the adult animated comedy Jodie. It’s the first in a series of spinoffs from the MTV franchise Daria. Ross will voice the character of Jodie.

Daria ran from 1997 to 2002 for five season and was a spin-off in its own right from another MTV hit Beavis and Butthead. Daria Morgendorffer was a character who shelled out dry wisdom beyond her high school years, and she was praised for her feminist take on issues such as race, class and gender.

Jodie is created and written by Grace Nkenge Edwards who earned her stripes on shows like Insecure and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. It will center around Daria’s good friend Jodie Landon, a Black character from the original series who’s credited with helping shape the minds of a generation of women. In her new show, Jodie will enter the tech world as her first job out of college. Other former students of Lawndale High will also make cameos on the show.

Jodie plans on satirizing generation Z struggles, workplace culture and of course the trials and tribulations of social media. Such themes like gender and racial empowerment will be the name of the game mixed in with a sharp sense of humor. It will be the first adult animated sitcom to center around a Black female lead in almost two decades.

“I am thrilled to bring this project to life with MTV, both as executive producer and by voicing Jodie’s character,” said Ross. “Being able to give voice to fresh, feminist and unexplored stories of young women excites me. ‘Jodie,’ will spin-off from the cult classic ‘Daria,’ and with the brilliant, sweet and sarcastic Black girl magic that is Jodie Landon, we will feature a diverse cast, comprised mainly of unapologetically smart and ambitious young female characters who are vulnerable and flawed and interesting and funny.”

We’ll continue to keep you posted when a release date and trailer is on its way.
