Texas Death Row Inmate Rodney Reed’s Execution Halted

According to the Dallas News, the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals has officially granted a stay and put the execution of Rodney Reed on hold. The decision was announced Friday evening after the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles suggested the execution be delayed for 120 days.

The decision was reportedly “based in part on his claims of actual innocence.”

Reed was sentenced to death more than two decades ago in connection to the murder of 19-year-old girl. Prosecutors involved with the case accused Reed of raping and killing Stites in 1996, after DNA tests linked Reed to the sperm found inside Stites’ body; however, Reed’s legal team claims their client was having an affair with the victim, which explained the DNA match.

Many people have stepped forward over the years accusing former police officer Jimmy Fennell in the murder. Fennell, Stites’ fiancé at the time, was released from prison in 2018, after kidnapping a woman while on duty. An inmate that served tome with him reported the ex-cop had bragged about killing his Stites because she was having an affair with a black man.

Thankfully, the case will head back to trial court, where the defense will present new evidence that will reportedly clear Reed’s name.

Rodney Reed Rallies Public Support In Case, Asking Gov. Abbott To Stop His Execution Amid New Evidence

Rodney Reed is scheduled to be executed in Texas on November 20th. He’s been on death row for 21 years for the 1996 murder of Stacey Stites in Bastrop, Texas. Police claim Reed assaulted, raped and strangled Stites, but he has ALWAYS maintained his innocence. The case has drawn significant media attention, with Reed gaining support from a number of public figures including Kim Kardashian, Dr. Phil and Shaun King all rallying for his execution to be stopped and another suspect to be thoroughly investigated.

Much of the support for Reed comes on the heels of former inmate Arthur Snow Jr. filing an affidavit in court earlier this week saying Stites’ fiancé, Jimmy Fennell, confessed to the murder years ago. In 2010, while Snow was serving a sentence for forgery at a DeWitt County, TX prison when he made a deal with Fennell, who was seeking protection from other prisoners, according to the affidavit. At the time Snow was a member of the Aryan Brotherhood gang.

According to CNN reports, Snow’s affidavit states he was in the prison yard with Fennell when he began bragging about killing Stites:

“Jimmy said his fiancé had been sleeping around with a black man behind his back,” Snow wrote.

“Toward the end of the conversation Jimmy said confidently, ‘I had to kill my n*****- loving fiancé,’” he added. “My impression was the Jimmy felt safe, even proud, sharing this information with me because I was a member of the Aryan Brotherhood. I think Jimmy assumed that his confession would impress me and earn him credibility with the Aryan Brotherhood.”

SMH. Snow claims he didn’t know about Reed’s case until a few years ago when he saw a photo of Fennell along with an article about Reed while he was jailed in Texas’ Hays County for a different offense. He says in his affidavit that that is when he realized Reed had been imprisoned for the murder Fennell confessed to him.

In the meantime, Fennell’s attorney, Robert Phillips, said Snow is a career criminal and his claim is not credible nor in the “world of reality.”

It’s worth noting that Jimmy Fennell served time in prison for rape years after Stites murder, but his attorney notes he’s since been released and has converted to Christianity and been helping people with drug addictions, Phillips said.

Fennell, who is a former police officer, was identified as a suspect during the police investigation into Stites’ killing, but he was never formerly charged.

Reed’s attorneys filed an application for clemency last week as they attempt to block his execution.

According to CNN reports, Bryce Benjet, a senior staff attorney at the Innocence Project and Reed’s lead counsel, said evidence clearly shows that Reed did not kill Stites.

“Mr. Reed’s execution is less than one month away, meaning Texas is frighteningly close to executing an innocent man,” Benjet said in a statement. Between the medical and scientific evidence, and multiple new, credible witnesses, the original case trial has been completely deconstructed and disproven.”

In the meantime, Reed’s supporters are asking for Texas Gov. Greg Abbott to intervene and stop his execution.

Texas Man Forged Wife’s Signature To File For Divorce

Some situations call for you to take matters into your own hands, while others get you arrested. That was the case for one Texas man who attempted to divorce his wife without her consent. 51-year old Paul Nixon submitted forged documents and false information to a Houston district court in an attempt to end his union with Mrs. Nixon.

According to the New York Daily News, Nixon also reportedly committed perjury when testifying in court during a divorce hearing. Authorities say the divorce has been set aside due to the fraudulent filing. Fox 6 News reports:

Authorities received a call on May 14 from a woman who said her husband had allegedly completed the divorce and that a court already filed the final decree. Through the investigation, authorities found that Nixon forged documents and submitted false information to the court. He also allegedly submitted a waiver of service with a forged signature from a notary.

Mark Herman of Harris County Constable Precinct 4 said that Nixon committed aggravated perjury when he testified during the final hearing on the validity of the documents and information. Authorities are currently still on the hunt for Nixon.

Texas Mother Locked Up For Killing 3-Year-Old Son In A Game Of “Chicken”

According to NY Daily News, a Texas mom allegedly played a game of chicken with her three kids and accidentally ran over & killed her 3-year-old son.

Lexus Stagg was charged with criminally negligent homicide after her “3-year-old child ran behind her vehicle as she backed out of her parking spot,” on June 11th.

Surveillance video from a nearby apartment complex allegedly shows Stagg getting into her SUV before driving in reverse. As her three kids began running after her, she slowly drove the SUV forward. While two kids evaded the vehicle, the 3-year-old got stuck beneath a tire.

A neighbor of Stagg, expressed his grief over the death of the little boy, but made it clear that Stagg was not a great mother.

The neighbor recalls:

“I felt bad because those parents, they were never there, they were kind of negligent..The kids were always out here without supervision.”

Two of Stagg’s older children have been placed with relatives while Stagg was arrested and faces a prison term of up to 10 years, if found guilty.

Ohio Governor Signs Heartbeat Bill Restricting Abortion

According to ABC News, Ohio has now added itself to a growing list of states that have signed a ban on abortions after a heartbeat can be detected.

Republican Gov. Mike DeWine signed the extremely controversial ban, which is one of the most stringent in the country, earlier this week. Similar bills were almost pushed through in Ohio in the past, but the state’s last Republican governor, John Kasich, vetoed those saying that they were unconstitutional.

“The essential function of government is to protect the most vulnerable among us, those who do not have a voice,” said Gov. DeWine about signing the bill. “Government’s rule should be to protect life from the beginning to the end, to protect those who cannot protect themselves. … The signing of this bill today is consistent with that respect for life.”

The abortion ban is said to take effect once a detectable heartbeat — which can be as early as six weeks into a pregnancy when some women may not know that they are pregnant — has been challenged in a number of other states.

As soon as DeWine signed the Ohio bill into law, the state’s chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) announced that they will be challenging it in court.

“This legislation is blatantly unconstitutional and we will fight to the bitter end to ensure that this bill is permanently blocked,” said Freda Levenson, the legal director of the ACLU of Ohio, in a statement. “SB 23 is one of the most aggressive, oppressive, and radical attacks against women ever seen in this state and this country.”
