Miss Jamaica’s Toni-Ann Singh’s Miss World Win Means 5 Black Women Hold Major Pageant Titles

The title circuit is currently flooded with melanin and #blackgirlmagic. After South Africa’s Zozibini Tunzwas was dubbed Miss Universe, there’s another black pageant Queen to celebrate.

On Sunday Jamaica’s Toni-Ann Singh won the Miss World crown, the 23-year-old’s win means that the titles of Miss World, Miss Universe, Miss America, Miss USA, and Miss Teen USA have all gone to Black women this year.
Singh, 23, is a native of St. Thomas, Jamaica, and is the fourth beauty queen from Jamaica to be crowned Miss World since Lisa Hanna in 1993.

“To that little girl in St. Thomas, Jamaica and all the girls around the world—please believe in yourself,” wrote Singh about her win. “Please know that you are worthy and capable of achieving your dreams. This crown is not mine but yours. You have a PURPOSE.”

Singh is the pride of her family, her uncle Theodore Bailey told The Jamaica Star that they all saw her win coming.

“As a toddler growing up, she would always tell us that she is going to be Miss World and Miss Jamaica. And fi si the manifestation come now, and that the world has to look up to mi niece, and even a community like Bath in St Thomas yah, mi feel real good man,” said Uncle Theodore.

“Words can’t even express my feelings right now, trust me. We a come from far and Toni-Ann always tell wi she is going to be the Joseph of this family. So even now it come in like is a dream come true or something, but to how me feel … boy, we have to really look pon it and say is like it’s a fulfilment of prophecy,” he added.

A win like this for five black women is especially historic considering that a few decades ago it wouldn’t be possible. In its first 30 years, black women weren’t even allowed to compete in the Miss America pageant.

As for Singh, she’s planning to go to medical school to become a doctor in women’s health.

Watch her historic crowning below.

“Kim is the jokester, they call me the leader, so I’m the mom, they call me the mom,” said DeeDee Freeman. “Monique is the one who’s a little bit more detailed. She doesn’t miss anything, she’s always on point asking and answering the right questions.”

Kobe Bryant Comforts Crash Victims In Los Angeles

Even though he’s not playing for the Lakers anymore, Kobe Bryant still shows love for the people of Los Angeles whenever he gets the chance.

TMZ Sports captured the former baller on video as he visited a crash scene in Newport Beach, California on Friday. Bryant ended up comforting crash victims and directing traffic on the side of the road following an accident.

The accident appeared to be pretty serious, but the extent of the injuries for those involved is still unknown at this time. Multiple cars were involved in the collision, and according to TMZ, the super foggy weather could have had something to do with it.

Surprisingly enough, this isn’t the retired basketball star’s first time making sure that car crash victims were okay after witnessing an accident. In 2018, Kobe witnessed a car running a red light and crashing into another vehicle. After that happened, Bryant took initiative and got out of his car to make sure the driver was all good.

Whether or not you’re a fan of Kobe Bryant the basketball player, you can’t hate on a guy who goes out of his way to make sure strangers are okay.

Tom Joyner Retires Afer 25 Years

Today is the last day you’ll hear an unmitigated radio icon on your airwaves. Tom Joyner is officially retiring today, December 13, after 25 years. The syndicated air personality/host of “The Tom Joyner Morning Show,” is hanging his hat as host of America’s No. 1 syndicated urban morning show, “The Tom Joyner Morning Show.”

As previously reported Rickey Smiley has been named as the radio legend’s successor. Smiley also announced that Eva Marcille and Gary With Da Tea would be among the on-air cast members joining him to broadcast out of the Dallas studios beginning January 2020.

“I’m happy to see the landscape of Urban AC morning radio continue to expand with Rickey, and I’m proud of the doors the Tom Joyner Morning Show opened. Twenty-five years ago, there was no template for a syndicated Urban radio show and we worked hard to prove that we could successfully produce and market a national platform that would entertain, inform and empower African-American listeners,” said Joyner in a statement.

“We broke some ground, raised the bar for what audiences expected from Black radio all while partying with a purpose. Yeah, we’ve done a lot but there’s still a lot left to be done. I’m confident that Rickey’s activism along with his love for radio, the community, and HBCUs, will pick up where we left off.”

“It’s an honor to continue the legacy of my boss and frat brother Tom Joyner,” said Rickey about getting Tom’s blessing.
“Not only has he been a friend to my family and me over the years, but we consider him family. Tom’s mentorship has instilled in me valuable wisdom that I will carry with me through this new morning show.”

Joyner also spoke with CBS This Morning and said he’s continuing his strong support of HBCUs. So far he’s raised more than $60 million to support historically black colleges. In his next chapter, he said he wants to continue that and concentrate on “putting [money] in the hands of college students to help their tuition at historically black colleges. That’s my goal. All after 12 noon.”

Congrats on 25 years, Tom!

DaBaby Hooks A Lucky Fan Up With Concert Tickets After Giddy Gas Station Meeting

It doesn’t matter who your favorite rapper is, there’s no chance he’s as in tune with his fans as DaBaby is with his. The North Carolina rapper has been caught once again going above and beyond for his supporters, and this time, it all went down at a gas station.

According to reports from TMZ, a fan by the name of Alexandria Coleman was lucky enough to get some free concert tickets from DaBaby after a chance encounter inside of a convenience store. The fan tells the publication that she was supposed to catch the rapper’s Washington D.C. concert last weekend, but because the “Suge” rapper ended up making his ‘Saturday Night Live‘ debut, Saturday’s concert ended up getting pushed to Sunday night, instead.

As for Alexandria, once the concert got pushed to the next day, it sold out before she was able to grab any tickets. Following her failed attempt at seeing DaBaby in concert, she began her trek driving back from Washington D.C. to Albany, New York–but in a crazy stroke of luck, she actually ended up running into DaBaby at a gas station.

Once the rapper and his team spotted the excited fan, they decided they definitely needed to catch the whole thing on camera. Once DaBaby and Alexandria finally came face-to-face in the aisle of the store the North Carolina native ended up jumping up into Coleman’s arms and staying cradled up in there for quite a while.

After their meeting, DaBaby’s team reportedly promised to get Alexandria and her friends into the sold-out concert–and on Sunday night, the three of them ended up getting the absolute best seats in the house.

This is far from the first time DaBaby has gone above and beyond for his fans. As we’ve previously reported, he recently performed via Facetime after experiencing plane trouble and missing a show in his hometown. You gotta love it.

In WRITE folks news…

TIME Magazine Names Climate Crisis Activist Greta Thunberg As Its Person Of The Year

TIME Magazine has named its annual Person of the Year, and this time it’s a change-making teen. Swedish climate crisis activist, Greta Thunberg, is taking home the publication’s top honors after gaining international attention for those scathing words she sent to world leaders at the UN Climate Action Summit in September and for her Skolstrejk för klimatet, “School Strike for Climate” in front of the Swedish Parliament that spread globally and sparked a movement.

According to TIME’s editor-in-chief Edward Felsenthal Greta’s absolutely the right choice.

“Thunberg has become the biggest voice on the biggest issue facing the planet—and the avatar of a broader generational shift in our culture that is playing out everywhere from the campuses of Hong Kong to the halls of Congress in Washington,” said Felsenthal.

At just 16-years-old she’s the youngest individual to be recognized.

Greta’s not alone. Along with Person of the Year, TIME is recognizing winners of four new categories. Athlete of the Year is the US women’s soccer team…

Entertainer of the Year is Lizzo…

and Business Person of the Year is Disney CEO Bob Iger.

TIME also created a special category for The Guardians of the Year, people who risked their careers for the greater good. Included are The Public Servants; whistleblower, Marie Yovanovitch, Ambassador William Taylor, Fiona Hill, Lieut. Colonel Alexander Vindman and Mark Sandy.

Mommy Cardi Covers VOGUE With Kulture, Talks Forgiving Offset—‘We Prayed On It’

Cardi Covers VOGUE With Kulture

Cardi is on the January 2020 cover of VOGUE and speaking candidly in an especially intimate interview.

This month, VOGUE handpicked Cardi and three other fierce creative forces, role models, and mothers to be celebrated with a quartet of covers. For Cardi’s cover styled by Tonne Goodman, she opens up to Rob Haskell about making music, her relationship, and becoming a mother. She also poses for artful Annie Leibovitz taken shots with her 1-year-old daughter Kulture by her side.

At one point things get especially interesting when she brings up Offset’s cheating and admits that they used prayers from priests to get through it. She also reiterated that she believes in monogamy and also believes in a** beating for cheating.

On her relationship being placed under a microscope:

“When me and my husband got into our issues—you know, he cheated and everything—and I decided to stay with him and work together with him, a lot of people were so mad at me; a lot of women felt disappointed in me. But it’s real-life shit. If you love somebody and you stop being with them, and you’re depressed and social media is telling you not to talk to that person because he cheated, you’re not really happy on the inside until you have the conversation. Then, if you get back with them, it’s like, how could you? You let all of us down.”

On her relationship with Offset:

“Everybody has issues. I believe in forgiveness. I prayed on it. Me and my husband, we prayed on it. We had priests come to us. And we just came to an understanding like, bro, it’s really us against the world. He has my back for everything, I have his back for everything, so when you cheat, you’re betraying the person that has your back the most. Why would you do that? We have come to a clear understanding. For me, monogamy is the only way. I’ll beat your a** if you cheat on me.”

Cardi also dished on the criticism she received for having a baby with Offset who already had three kids before Kulture. Cardi told VOGUE that seeing Offset in daddy mode makes her happy and she can relate because she too comes from a big family. Cardi has seven siblings.

“When I was pregnant with Kulture, a lot of people was like, oh, he has three kids already; why would you have a kid with somebody that have three kids? And it’s like, how is that such a bad thing?” said Cardi. “My dad has eight kids, and we all get along, and it feels better, fuller. And with Offset, I feel like his kids just bring a pop of fun to life when they’re in his house. I actually love it. It brings out a different side of him that I like to see, and I love to see my baby interacting with her siblings.”

The more the merrier, right???

Zozibini Tunzi Crowned Miss Universe 2019

During last night’s Miss Universe 2019 pageant, a stunner from South Africa took home the to prize. Zozibini Tunzi is Miss Universe 2019 after beating out Puerto Rico’s Madison Anderson and Mexico’s Sofia Aragon in the final three.

Zozibini stunned in the all the categories but it was the interview portion where she really shined. In her final question, the 26-year-old was asked “What should be teaching young girls today” and she gave a brilliant response.

Zozibini wants little girls to learn about leadership and to “take up space.”

“Leadership. It’s something that has been lacking in young girls and women for a very long time – not because we don’t want to, but because of what society has labelled women to be,” she said.

“I think we are the most powerful beings in the world, and that we should be given every opportunity. And that is what we should be teaching these young girls – to take up space.”

BOOM.

Zozibini is the first black woman to win the competition since Leila Lopes in 2011. This also makes the first time Miss USA, Miss America, Miss Teen USA, and Miss Universe have all been black women.

Zozibini is described as a” proud advocate for natural beauty” and a passionate activist “engaged in the fight against gender-based violence.”

Isn’t she lovely???

Congratulations to Miss Universe Zozibini Tunzi!
